Stanford Fencing Coaches
Co-Head Coach Lisa Posthumus Milgram Lisa Milgram has been the Co-head coach of the men's and women's fencing teams since 1999. Lisa is a 1993 graduate of Pennsylvania State University. At Penn State she led the team to the NCAA Championship in 1990, finishing third overall in women's foil. She was a three time letter winner with a degree in Exercise Sport Science. Lisa was a member of the Junior World Championships epee' team in Vienna and won the Junior Olympics. She was a nationally ranked fencer in both epee' and foil. Lisa was head coach at UC San Diego for three seasons before coming to Stanford. She came to Stanford as assistant coach from 1996. During her time on the Farm, Stanford has finished third at the NCAA Championships, first at NCAA Regionals and had five athletes win individual NCAA championships. She is the only current female head coach of a men's Division I fencing program in the U.S. She is a coach on and off the fencing strips, advising varsity athletes on time management to manage stress and maintain academic excellence.
Co-Head Coach George Pogosov George joined the Stanford Fencing in 1998. He shares head coaching leadership with Lisa Milgram. He is the Head Coach of the Cardinal Fencing Club which provides fencing lessons and practice for adults and children from the community. His credentials include an Olympic Silver Medal in 1988 in Seoul, a Gold Medal in 1992 in Barcelona and a Team World Championship. He has a total of six World Championships and was the Junior World Champion in 1980. George has a master's degree in physical education from the Institute of Physical Culture, Kiev, Ukraine and a Diploma from the Tyschler Fencing Academy. Some of George's child club fencers have gone on to become Stanford Varsity fencers.
Valeriy Naulo Valeriy came to Stanford Fencing in 2004. He is the assistant coach for the men's and women's varsity fencing teams as well as the assistant coach for the Cardinal Fencing Club. He teaches foil and epee'. Valeriy has an outstanding record and was ranked in the top five fencers in Ukraine for four years during his time in competition. Valeriy has a Master's Degree in Physical Education with a focus on fencing from the National University of Physical Education and Sports of Ukraine. He worked with the Ukrainian National Students Team. He also taught classes at the Stormbringer Sports Club.
Sasha Lepeshinski Sasha joined the Stanford Fencing Coaches in 2005. Sasha was a 12 time champion of Belarus and a finalist in numerous international tournaments. He graduated from the National University of Physical Education and Sports in Belarus, and has a Master's Degree in Physical Education with a focus on fencing. He worked in the National Olympic Center and was the first coach of Dmitry Lapkes, the World Cup winner, European Champion and an Olympic finalist. In the U.S., Sasha worked with children in Los Angeles schools, recreation programs and fencing clubs. He teaches all weapons to Varsity Fencers as well as adult and child club members.
A TRIBUTE TO SHERRY POSTHUMUS
1945-2007
Sherry was inducted into the USFA Fencing Hall of Fame July 7, 2009.
A vital driving force in the fencing world, Sherry represented the United States as the team leader of three Olympic Teams (1988, 1992, 1996), not to mention thebeing the managing senior and junior World Championship and Pan-American teams. She was the first woman Olympic team leader in the history of the sport and a member of the US Olympic Committee. She helped shape the growth and development of the sport of fencing domestically and internationally.
At Stanford University, where she coached for twenty-five years she built a highly competitive collegiate program and became Assistant Athletic Director. Her students included her daughters Lisa and Jennifer and future USFA Champion and Hall of Fame Member, Nick Bravin. She was named NCAA Women's Coach of the Year and chaired the NCAA National Fencing Committee. While at Stanford University Sherry began the enormously popular Pirate Camp, that turns the Stanford campus into a haven for young swashbucklers each summer.
Sherry Posthumus left a trail of new fencing clubs like footprints in her wake throughout her adult life, especially as founder of Stanford Fencing Club, co-founder of San Jose Fencing Center and co-founder of The Fencing Post. She served the USFA as a member of the Coaches and Junior Development Committees and eventually, as a Vice President.
A consummate hostess, cook, tinkerer, entrepreneur and wit, she is remembered as a beloved wife, mother, friend, coach and advisor by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
